Garcia's Gem and Hot Bats Lead Royals to Sweep of Spirit

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (19-6, 9-4 GSAC) bounced back as they a swept a doubleheader against the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit 22-7 and 6-0 on Friday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton.

Game 1:
Connor Martin (4-1) picked up the victory pitching 6 innings allowing three runs, two earned on seven hits while walking one and striking out eight. J.J. Cruz led the offense going 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs.

The Royals jumped on top of the Spirit early as David Rivera launched a solo home run to right with one out to put the Royals up 1-0. A hit by pitch and double would follow before a J.J. Cruz fielder's choice made it 2-0. A wild pitch would then add a third run as the Royals took a 3-0 lead. The Spirit would pull one back in the top of the second to make it 3-1 but the Royals would quickly answer a big bottom of the second. After a single and two walk loaded the bases a hit batter would follow to make it 4-1. Max Jung-Goldberg then ripped a two run single to right to make it 6-1. Then later with two outs J.J. Cruz delivered a two RBI single to increase the lead to 8-1.

The Spirit once again answered with a run to make it 8-2 in the top of the third but once again the Royals had all the answers as they put up another big inning in the fourth. With two on and nobody out Omar Veloz ripped a single to left to make it 11-2. Then with one out Branden Chung-Ming crushed a three run bomb to left to increase the Royals lead to 12-2. The Spirit pulled one back in the top of the fifth to make it 12-3 but it was the Royals who struck for another big inning in the bottom half. With a runner on second and two down Cruz lined a singled to right to make it 13-3. Veloz then ripped an RBI double to center to make it 14-3. Matthew Pinal then followed with an RBI single under the second baseman's glove to push the Royals lead to 15-3. A wild pitch then made it 16-3 before Alex Moreno ripped an RBI single to center to make it 17-3. The Royals weren't done as they loaded the bases before a walk increased their advantage to 18-3.

The Royals bats kept clicking as they added another run in the bottom of the sixth on a two out double by Chase Hanson to make it 19-3. The Royals then struck again in the seventh as Joshua Carlos crushed his first home run of the season a two run shot to right field to make it 21-3. The Spirit answered with a run in the top of the eighth to make it 21-4 but the Royals got it right back in the bottom half on a two out RBI single by Dominic Riggio to make it 22-4. The Spirit then got three runs in the ninth to make it 22-7 but Noah Stevens would come back to get the final out as the Royals won big.

Game 2:
Hector Garcia (2-0) picked up the win and was nearly perfect pitching 6 1/3 innings of one hit ball while walking one and striking out 15. Branden Chung-Ming and Max Jung-Goldberg led the Royals offense driving in two runs each.

Garcia got things started by striking out the side before the Royals opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. After a walk and a single Jung-Goldberg ripped a base hit into center to put the Royals on top 1-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the third with back to back solo runs from David Rivera and Jung-Goldberg to make it 3-0. Garcia continued to shutdown the Spirit while the Royals added another run in the fourth on a Chung-Ming RBI single to make it 4-0. The Royals weren't done scoring as they added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff single Chung Ming ripped a triple to center to make it 5-0 and then later he scored on a wild pitch as the Royals took a 6-0 lead.

Garcia continued to dazzle on the mound as he took a no hitter into the top of the seventh but the Spirit would finally get a hit as he walked off to a standing ovation from everyone at the field. Steven Ordorica would then come in to get the final two outs as the Royals won 6-0.

The Royals wrap up their series against OUAZ on Saturday, March 25 at 12:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
