Royals Bounce Back Sweep Warriors With Walk Off and Great Pitching

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (2-1) bounced back from their opening day loss as they took down the Westcliff Warriors in a doubleheader by the scores of 7-6 and 7-1 on Friday at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Hector Garcia got the start and pitched two and 1/3 innings while allowing four runs, two earned on four hits while walking three and striking out five. Steven Ordorica picked up the win in relief pitching one and 2/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three. Omar Veloz led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The game cruised into the top of the third scoreless when Garcia ran into trouble. With two on and one out an error allowed a run to score. The Warriors would then follow with three more runs as they took a 4-0 lead and chased Garcia from the game. Matthew Pinal then came in in relief with the bases loaded and one out and struck out both batters he faced to end the damage.

The Royals then took advantage of a Warriors error in the bottom of the fifth as they started a rally. A Ryan Lamastra RBI groundout plated the first run for the Royals to make it 4-1. David Rivera then doubled before Chase Hanson lined a single up the middle to make it 4-2 at the end of the fifth. The Royals then got back to work in the bottom of the sixth. With two on and nobody out Omar Veloz ripped a double down the left field line to tie the game 4-4. A balk then put the Royals up 5-4. That lead wouldn't last long though as the Warriors struck for two runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead at 6-5.

The Royals would then go down in order in the seventh and eighth as they trailed 6-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Junior Coleman led off the inning with an infield single as he just beat the throw to get the Royals started. Then with two outs and down to his final strike Robert Mattei delivered with a single through the left side to tie the game 6-6. Maxfield Jung-Goldberg then hit a slow chopper between the pitcher and first base which allowed the winning run to score as the Royals walked off to a 7-6 victory.

Game 2:
Needing a quality start in game two Connor Martin delivered as he pitched 4 innings of one hit ball while striking out six and walking one. Bailey Roberson (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he pitched two and 1/3 innings while allowing one run on three hits and striking out four. David Rivera and Chase Hanson led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 and 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one home run each.

The second game moved at a much faster pace as it was scoreles until the bottom of the third. Then after a Rivera single with one out Hanson blasted his first home run of the season to put the Royals up 2-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Rivera launched a lead off home run his second of the season to make it 3-0. Two batters later Omar Veloz followed with his own solo shot over the left field wall to increase the Royals advantage to 4-0.

The Warriors would then break the Royals shutout in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout as they cut the Royals lead to 4-1. The Royals pitchers continued to deal though as they held onto a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. The Royals would then add three insurance runs before David Rudd-Grow came in and got three quick outs as they emerged with a sweep and a 7-1 victory.
