Castro Leads Royals to GSAC Semis With Comeback Win

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (19-9) came from behind to knock off the Jessup University Warriors 68-64 in the GSAC quarterfinals on Thursday night at home in the Darling Pavilion.

It was a low scoring first half as they Royals started out with a quick basket from Rasheet Wilson followed by a rare four point play on a three pointer as they took a 6-3 lead five minutes into the game. With both teams shooting poorly it was the Warriors who managed to do slightly better as they went on an 8-0 run to take an 11-6 lead. The Royals answered as they came back to get within 11-10 midway through the first. The Warriors then pulled out to a 16-10 lead before the Royals came back to tie it 20-20 on a layup by Wilson with 4:01 remaining. The teams then exchanged leads before the Warriors closed the half on an 11-3 run as they took a 36-27 lead at halftime.

The Royals regrouped at halftime and opened the second half on a 10-1 run led by five points from Sebastian Castro as they tied the game up at 37-37 with plenty of time remaining. The Warriors managed to stay head until Wilson put the Royals back ahead 42-41 with 14:04 to go. The Warriors would stretch their lead back out to five at 50-45 but once again the Royals rallied to retake the lead at 52-50 on a pair of free throws by Tristan Williams with 7:08 to go. It was a see saw battle from there as the teams exchanged leads before Castro put the Royals back up 61-60 with 2:44 to go. The Royals would then come up big on the defensive end while Jalani Horn finished off a three point play to make it 64-60 with 1:50 to go. The Warriors continued to fight but the Royals stood strong as they emerged victorious 68-64. Castro led the offense with 17 points.

The Royals continue action at home at the GSAC tournament as they host No. 2 The Master's University in the semifinals on Friday, February 24 at 7:15 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
