Williams and Horn Lead Royals To GSAC Championship Game With Win Over Mustangs

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (20-9) fended off a late comeback attempt as they took down the Master's University Mustangs 78-75 in the semifinals of the GSAC Championships on Friday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

Unlike the previous night this game started out with better shooting from both sides as the teams exchanged leads before the Mustangs went up 10-6. The Royals quickly responded with an 8-0 run finished off by a Rasheet Wilson three to take a 14-10 lead. The Mustangs responded well tying it up 18-18 before going on to take a 25-22 lead with 9:12 to go. The Royals then answered with a 10-2 run led by six points from Tristan Williams as they took a 32-27 lead. The Mustangs kept fighting as they go back within 34-33 with 2:29 to go. The Royals stepped it up from there as Jalani Horn hit a couple free throws before a buzzer beater by Sebastian Castro put them up 39-33 which is where the score would stand at halftime.

The Mustangs didn't go away easily as they quickly cut the Royals lead to one at 43-42 with 16:42 remaining. The Royals quickly called a timeout and regrouped with Horn scoring a basket and Williams nailing another three to increase their lead to 48-42. The Royals pushed their lead to seven points on a Gaven Ramirez bucket with 12:11 to go. The Mustangs wouldn't go away as they came back to take the lead 63-62 with 4:29 remaining. The teams then exchanged leads before Castro nailed a three to put the Royals up 68-66 with 3:29 to go. The Royals continued to lead from there but a late charge from the Mustangs got them close but a Horn block denied them of a chance to tie it as the Royals won 78-75. Tristan Williams put up a career high 26 points while Horn added 28 to lead the Royals.

The Royals now advance to the GSAC Championship game where they will take on the defending tournament champions No. 5 OUAZ on Saturday, February 26 at 6:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
