Errors Cost Royals Late As They Fall To Poets 9-8

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (11-3) dropped a tough error filled wet game to the Whittier College Poets on a drizzly Tuesday evening at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA

Tyler Tilton got the start pitching 5 innings allowing two runs, none earned on five hits while walking two and striking out seven. Justin Drury (2-1) took the loss in relief pitching two inning allowing three runs, one earned on four hits while striking out six. David Rivera led the Royals off the bench going 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs including a home run.

It was a tough start for the Royals as a dropped fly ball in the first led to two runs as they fell behind 2-0 in the first. The Royals would quickly get back in it as Ryan Lamastra led off the inning with a single and then later stole home before the third out could be recorded as the Royals made it 2-1. Ethan Hagen then delivered a sac fly in the bottom of the second to tie it 2-2.

The game would continue that way until the top of the sixth when the Poets would retake a 3-2 lead. The Royals though responded in the bottom half as Omar Veloz walked and then Rivera crushed a pinch hit two run home run over the right field wall to give the Royals a 4-3 lead. Later in the inning Junior Coleman delivered a sac fly to increase the Royals lead to 5-3. The Poets though pulled back a run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-4. Max Jung-Goldberg then answered for the Royals as he crushed a solo home run down the right field line that just stayed foul to make it 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh.

The Poets though wouldn't go away as they put up two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game 6-6. The Poets then would retake the lead as they took advantage of a Royals error and scored three runs to make it 9-6. The Royals wouldn't go down without a fight as they loaded the bases with nobody in the bottom of the ninth. A fielder's choice by Jung-Goldberg than made it 9-7 before a sac fly from Rivera cut it to 9-8. The Royals couldn't come up with the winning hit though as they fell 9-8.

The Royals return to action as they take on San Diego Christian College as the road team but at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton with a double header beginning at Friday, February 24 at 11:00 AM
