Royals Sweep Hawks Behind Hoetker Gem

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (13-3, 5-1 GSAC) rebounded from their loss on Tuesday with a double header sweep of the San Diego Christian College Hawks on Sunday evening at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA. The Royals were the away team because the Hawks were supposed to host but did not have a field. The third game of the series has been postponed due to weather and will be made up at a later date.

Game 1:
Matthew Pinal (2-0) picked up the victory pitching 6 innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out 11. Steven Ordorica picked up his second save of the season pitcher 2/3 of an inning while allowing no hits. Alex Moreno and Robert Mattei led the Royals offense with each going 2-for-5 with one RBI.

The Royals would open the scoring in the top of the first as they loaded the bases with two outs. Mattei then lined a clutch single up the middle to make it 1-0. Then after a hit batter J.J. Cruz lined an RBI single through the left side to increase the lead to 2-0. The Hawks would pull a run back immediately in the bottom of the first as the Royals took a 2-1 lead.

Moreno then delivered with a big two out RBI double to left field in the top of the second to put the Royals back ahead two runs at 3-1. The Royals would then add another run in the top of the third as they increased their lead to 4-1. Later in the sixth an RBI groundout made it 5-1 before the Hawks struck back with a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-2. The score would stay that way until the eighth when Aaron Orozco launched a home run over the left center field wall to make it 6-2.

The Hawks would strike back in the bottom of the ninth as they loaded the bases with one out before driving in a run to make it 6-3. Ordorica would then come in from the bullpen and shut down any comeback attempt inducing a fly out and a ground out as the Royals won 6-3.

Game 2:
Seth Hoetker (1-0) picked up the victory pitching a one hitter over five shutout innings while striking out four. Steven Ordorica earned his third save and second of the night as he pitched to just one batter to end the game. Max Jung-Goldberg led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with two RBIs

It was a pitcher's due early on as there was just one hit over the first three innings until the Royals finally broke through in the top of the fourth. After back to back singles started the innings and both runners moved over on a steal Jung-Goldberg stepped to the plate and lined a two run single up the middle to make it 2-0. The Royals would then add to their lead in the top of the fifth as David Rivera delivered a two out RBI single to make it 3-0.

On the other side Royals pitching continued to shutdown the Hawks as Ryan Lachemann came in and pitched 1 2/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three. He did run into a little trouble in the ninth but Ordorica came in to get the last out with the bases loaded as the Royals won 3-0 and swept the Hawks.

The Royals return to action on the road as they head to Lancaster, CA on Tuesday, February 28 to take on the University of Antelope Valley at 1:00 PM.
