Fine Puts Up 36 As Royals Stun No. 12 Lions In OT On Senior Night

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (21-7, 13-5 GSAC) once again knocked of No. 12 Vanguard 73-63 in OT in a big upset on Senior night on Saturday afternoon at home in the Darling Pavilion.

With the Royals seniors being honored before the game the team was ready to give the No. 12 Lions all they could handle. The Lions though jumped out to an early 9-3 lead but the Royals weren't going to let them get away Ana Resendiz and Ysabelle Halemano nailed back to back threes to tie it 9-9 midway through the first. Once again the Lions would pull back out to a 15-10 advantage but the Royals came right back to tie it 15-15 on a Resendiz basket before the Lions took a 17-15 lead at the end of the first. The Royals once again tied it up 17-17 on a basket by Shailissa Jarret but the Lions looked to take control as they jumped out to a 36-27 lead with 2:21 to go. The Royals fought back though as Shiane Talley sunk a three before Resendiz laid it in at the buzzer to pull the Royals within 36-32 at halftime.

The Royals continued their momentum into the third as they opened on a 5-0 run with all five points coming from Jeanette Fine as they took a 37-36 lead. The Lions came back to tie it but from there the Royals stayed step by step with the Lions as they tied it 44-44 before a late basket put the Lions back up 46-44 at the end of the third. The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle as the teams exchanged baskets with the Lions taking a 59-57 lead with 1:04 left. Fine then drove to the basket and laid it in and earned a foul which she converted to put the Royals up 60-59 with :02 seconds left. Unfortunately a foul by the Royals gave the Lions a chance but they only hit one free throw to send it to overtime at 60-60.

The Lions scored the first bucket in overtime as they took a 62-60 lead. The Royals though weren't going to lose on Senior night on their home floor as they finished the game on a 13-1 run started off by a big three from Jarrett and a layup by Fine as they pulled off the upset 73-63 in overtime. Fine led the Royals with a double double (36 points, 13 rebounds)

The Royals will open up GSAC tournament play as the No. 4 seed taking on the No. 5 seed The Master's on Thursday, February 23 in Atherton, CA.
