Royals Open GSAC Play With Series Win Against No. 13 Warriors

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (11-2, 2-1 GSAC) swept their second doubleheader with the No. 13 Westmont College Warriors as they won the pivotal third GSAC game 8-1 and the second one which counts as non conference 8-5 on Saturday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Matthew Pinal got the start pitching 5 innings allowing just one run on five hits while walking two and striking out five. Steven Ordorica (4-0) picked up the win in relief pitching four innings allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out one. David Rivera, Robert Mattei and Junior Coleman led the Royals offense with each driving in two runs.

It was the Warriors who opened the scoring in this one as they took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Pinal would settle in from their as he shutdown the Warriors in the top of the second before the Royals struck back in the bottom half. The Royals would load the bases with nobody out and then tie the game 1-1 on a hit by pitch. Then later in the inning Rivera delivered a two out two run single to left to put the Royals on top 3-1. The Royals weren't done as they added to their lead in the bottom of the third. Alex Moreno led off the inning with a single and stole second before Omar Veloz hit a booming double to right field with two outs to bring him home and make it 4-1. Coleman then stroked a single to left to make it 5-1.

On the other side Ordorica came in for Pinal and continued to shutdown the Warriors as he put them down in order in the top of the fifth. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Mattei crushed a two run shot to the deepest part of the park in center field to make it 7-1. Then in the seventh Max Jung-Goldberg lined a double to left to drive in another run as the Royals won 8-1 and took the conference series two games to one.

Game 2:
Seth Hoetker got the start pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing just one hit while walking three and striking out one. Justin Drury (2-0) picked up the win in relief pitching two no hit innings while striking out two. David Rudd-Grow notched his first save of the season throwing a hitless seventh inning while striking out two. J.J. Cruz led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs

This time it was the Royals who opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Coleman delivered a two out RBI to make it 1-0. That lead wouldn't last long as the Warriors put up five runs in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead. The Royals would get right back to work in the bottom half as Matthew Dorado crushed a lead off home run to make it 5-2. Then with two outs Mattei delivered a single to center over the glove of the diving outfielder to make it 5-3. Cruz then followed with an RBI single before some trickery on the base paths allowed Mattei to race home for the go ahead run at 5-5.

It was all Royals from there as Drury came in and put down the Warriors in order in the fourth and fifth innings. The Royals then took the lead in the bottom half. After Rivera led off with a double he would come around to score following a sac bunt and a wild pitch to give the Royals a 6-5 lead. Then later in the inning Cruz followed with another two out RBI bloop single down the right field line to put the Royals on top 8-5. Noah Stevens and then Rudd-Grow shut down the Warriors the rest of the way as the Royals won 8-5.
