Royals Split Opening GSAC Doubleheader With No. 13 Warriors

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (9-2, 1-1 GSAC) split their GSAC opening doubleheader with the No. 13 Westmont College Warriors as they won the first game 3-2 and lost the second 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Connor Martin (2-0) picked up the victory pitching a two hitter over six innings while striking out 9. Steven Ordorica earned his first save of the season in relief pitching one and 1/3 no hit innings while striking out two. Chase Hanson and Alex Moreno led the Royals offense with each going 1-for-4 with one RBI.

It was a pitcher's duel throughoutt as both pitcher's were dealing with the fist hit coming in the top of the third by the Warriors. Martin stood strong though and only allowed two hits total as the game headed scoreless into the bottom of the sixth.

After being stymied for six innings the Royals offense came through in the bottom of the sixth. With one out David Rivera lined a double to right center to start a rally. Alex Moreno then followed with a double just out of the reach of the left fielder as the Royals took a 1-0 lead. Hanson then stepped up and delivered an RBI single to center to increase the lead to 2-0. Later Hanson raced home on arrow by the catcher as the Royals took a 3-0 lead.

The Warriors wouldn't give in easily though as they scored one in the top of the seventh and added another in the top of the eighth as they pulled within 3-2. With two on and two out and the Warriors threatening for more Ordorica came in and induced a groundout to end the damage. He then pitched a flawless ninth striking out the final two batters as the Royals won their GSAC opener.

Game 2:
Hector Garcia got the start pitching five shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six. Raul Herrada (0-2) took the the loss in relief pitching 1 1/3 innings while allowing two runs on three hits while striking out one.

Just like the first game the second game was another classic pitcher's duel as neither team yielded easily. The biggest Royals threat came when David Rivera hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the third but the Royals were unable to cash in. The game was then scoreless until the top of the seventh when the Warriors got a leadoff double and then scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead. That's where the score would stand as the Royals were unable to answer in the bottom half as they fell 2-0.

The Royals wrap up their four game series at home against No. 13 Westmont College with another doubleheader starting at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 18 at Duane Winters Field. Only the first game will count for GSAC standings.
