Mattei Walk Off Leads Royals to Come From Behind Victory Over Golden Eagles

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (8-1) avenged their opening day loss as they took down the La Sierra University Golden Eagles 8-7 ending a three game losing streak to them in walk off come from behind fashion on Tuesday evening at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Tyler Tilton got the start and pitched two innings while allowing one run on one hit while walking three and striking out four. David Rudd-Grow picked up the victory in relief pitching one no hit inning while walking one and striking out three. Robert Mattei led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs including the walk off hit.

The Royals ran into trouble right away as Tilton walked three straight batters which then led to a run as the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. That didn't last long as the Royals got right to work in the bottom half. Alex Moreno quickly tied the game as he crushed the ball over the right field wall to make it 1-1. Two batters later Mattei delivered a single to center to put the Royals up 2-1. Omar Veloz then ripped a double into center field to make it 3-1 at the end of the first.

The Golden Eagles kept coming though as they pulled back a run in the top of the third to make it 3-2. They would then tack on two more in the top of the fourth to retake the lead at 4-3. The Golden Eagles then took advantage of several Royals miscues as they stretched their lead to 7-3 in the top of the fifth.

The Royals didn't give up as they mounted a comeback just like a few days ago. After a Mattei leadoff double two batters later Matthew Pinal hit a booming triple off the right field wall to make it 7-4. Junior Coleman then brought him home with an RBI groundout to make it 7-5 after the sixth. The Royals then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out. Mattei then walked to make it 7-6 and then Veloz blooped a single into left to bring home the tying run at 7-7.

Neither team were able to win the game in nine innings as it headed to extras. The Golden Eagles did a good job of holding the Royals at bay until the bottom of the 11th when Moreno lined a single past the third baseman to lead it off. A sac bunt and intentional walk followed before Mattei grounded an RBI single through the right side to walk it off for the Royals 8-7 as they beat the Golden Eagles for only the second time.

The Royals continue action as they open up GSAC play at home against No. 13 Westmont College in a four game series starting at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 17 at Duane Winters Field.
