Jung-Goldberg and Moreno Help Royals Rally From Behind Twice To Sweep Eagles

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (7-1) ran their win streak to seven games as they came from behind twice winning 20-10 and 9-8 to sweep the Embry-Riddle (AZ) Eagles in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA

Game 1:
Ryan Lachemann got the start and pitched 2 2/3 innings while allowing seven runs, six earned on eight hits while walking one and striking out three. Matthew Pinal (1-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 3 1/3 innings while allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four and walking one. Maxfield Jung Goldberg led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with five RBIs off two big home runs.

The Eagles jumped on top early as they got two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. That lead wouldn't last long as the Royals would strike back on a two run shot by Jung-Goldberg to tie the game 2-2. The Royals then took the lead in the bottom of the second as David Rivera ripped a two out two run double to center field to put the Royals up 4-2.

The Eagles got right back to work in the top of the third as they knocked Lachemann out of the game and put up five runs to retake the lead at 7-4. The Royals would then trail until the bottom of the fifth when they struck for a huge inning. After the first two batters reached on singles Jung-Goldberg crushed his second home run of the game to tie it 7-7. The Royals then loaded the bases with nobody out before a walk to Ethan Hagen gave them an 8-7 lead. A wild pitch then made it 9-7 before Ryan Lamastra lined a single up the middle to increase the lead to 11-7. Back to back RBI hits by Rivera and Alex Moreno made it 13-7. The Royals weren't done as Omar Veloz then dropped an RBI single into left field to make it 14-7. The Royals would then reload the bases and score again on a hit by pitch, then a sac fly, and two RBI singles from Lamastra and Ethan Hagen as they took a commanding 18-7 lead.

The Eagles would then pull two runs back in the top of the sixth as they made it 18-9. The Royals continued scoring too as they scored on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Hagen as they went back up 20-9. The Eagles would pull back another run in the top of the eighth but Matthew Sagmit came in for the Royals in the ninth to prevent any more runs as the Royals won 20-10.

Game 2:
Seth Hoetker got the start and pitched two and 1/3 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out four. Steven Ordorica (3-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 2 2/3 innings while allowing just one run on three hits and striking out three. Alex Moreno led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with 4 RBIs including the game winning home run.

The Royals struck in the top of the first as Jung-Goldberg ripped a one out RBI double down the right field line to make it 1-0. That lead wouldn't last long as the Eagles struck for six runs in the top of the third to take a 6-1 lead. The Royals weren't deterred though as they fought back in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on second a third with no outs Moreno delivered a sac fly to cut the score to 6-2. Two batters later Veloz lined an RBI single to right field to make it 6-3.

The Eagles got back to work in the top of the fifth to increase their lead to 7-3. The Royals kept coming though as they answered in the bottom half. Veloz delivered another clutch RBI single to make it 7-4 before Chase Hanson delivered an RBI single to center to cut the score to 7-5. After a scoreless top of the sixth the Royals got back to work in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out Rivera delivered an RBI groundout to make it 7-6 before Moreno launched a go ahead three run home run over the right field wall to put the Royals up 9-7. The Eagles would pull a run back in the top of the seventh but Odorica induced a groundout to end the game with the potential go ahead run at the plate.

The Royals continue action at home as they host La Sierra on Tuesday, February 14 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
