Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University softball team (1-1) opened up their season with a doubleheader split against No. 10 Southern Oregon on Friday afternoon at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA. The Royals won the first game 4-0 while the Raiders took the second 3-2.
Game 1:
Allie Puente (1-0) got the start and threw a complete game three hitter while striking out five and walking just two on 82 pitches.
Makenna O'Toole led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with one home run.
After Puente pitched a scoreless top of the first the Royals jumped on top of the Raiders in the bottom half as
Makenna O'Toole launched a solo home run to center to make it 1-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the second. The Royals loaded the bases and then Ariana lined a single to center to make it 2-0. The Royals would then follow with two bases loaded walks as they took a 4-0 lead.
Puente continued to deal on the mound as she didn't allow a hit until the fourth when the Raiders put runners on first and second with one out. Puente then ended the threat by inducing a double play. From there it was smooth sailing until the sixth when the Royals ran into some trouble but were able to get out of it as they took down the Raiders 4-0.
Game 2:
Olivia Candelas (0-1) got the start and took the loss as she threw all seven innings while allowing three runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out one. Ariana Coronado led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
This time it would be the Raiders who struck first as they made it 1-0 in the top first. The Raiders then added to their lead in the top of the third as they took a 2-0 lead. The Royals quickly answered in the bottom of the third as
Ariana Coronado delivered an RBI single to cut the Raiders lead to 2-1.
The Raiders then added to their lead in the top of the fifth as they took a 3-1 lead. The Royals didn't give up though and continued to battle as they started a rally in the bottom of the seventh. The first two batters would reach on single before a sac bunt moved the runner over to second and third.
Leah Macias would then drive in a run on a fielder's choice to make it 3-2 but a groundout would follow to end the game as the Royals fell and split the series.
The Royals continue action on the road tomorrow as they head to San Marcos, CA for a doubleheader against the University of Saint Katherine beginning at 1:00 PM.
