San Marcos, CA – The Hope International University softball team (3-1) continued their season with a double header sweep of the University of Saint Katherine Firebirds on Saturday afternoon in San Marcos, CA
Game 1:
Allie Puente (2-0) picked up her second victory pitching 6 innings while allowing two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out 13.
Emma McCraw led the Royals offense going 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs
The Royals opened the scoring in the top of the first as Emily Puente blasted a two run home run to make it 2-0. Two batters later McCraw followed with a two run shot to increase the Royals lead to 4-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the top of the second as back to back RBI singles by Jaylyn Hernandez and Makenna O'Toole increased the Royals lead to 6-0. The Royals weren't done as later in the inning a sac fly by McCraw made it 7-0 before an error allowed another run to score as the Royals led 8-0 after the second.
Allie Puente continued to put up zeros until the bottom of the fourth when the Firebirds pulled back two runs to make it 8-2. The Royals would then increase their lead to 9-2 on a sac fly by Alena De La Torre in the top of the sixth. The Firebirds didn't give up though as they struck for three runs in the bottom of the seventh before Grace Craig induced a ground out to end the game as the Royals won 9-5.
Game 2:
Olivia Candelas (1-1) got the start and picked up her first victory pitching all seven innings while allowing four runs on nine hits while walking seven and striking out seven.
Nikki Marquez led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with 4 RBIs.
Once again the Royals got the scoring started in the top of the first as O'Toole ripped a two run double down the left field line to make it 2-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by O'Toole as they took a 3-0 lead.
The Firebirds would strike back in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-1. The Royals though would make it 4-1 as Makenna Stuart lined a single up the middle in the top of the third. The Royals offense continued to click in the fourth as Marquez delivered a bases clearing two out three run double down the left field line to increase the lead to 7-1.
The Firebirds answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-2. Two innings later the Royals added to their lead on an error to make it 8-2. The Firebirds would score two times in the bottom of the seventh but Candelas got out of it, inducing a strikeout and a ground out with two on and one out.
The Royals continue action on the road as they head to Rocklin, CA and neutral ground to take on Eastern Oregon and Northwest beginning on Friday, February 17 at 12:00 PM.
