Royals Defense Shuts Down Warriors in 63-50 Wire to Wire Win

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (9-3) won their sixth game in a row as they led from start to finish in a 63-50 win over the SAGU American Indian Warriors to wrap up HIU Tournament play on Friday afternoon in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals got off to a strong start as they opened on an 8-0 run finished off by a three point play from Calen Murray. The Warriors rallied to get within 11-8 with 10:48 remaining but the Royals had all the answers as a jumper by Cameron Dashiell pushed the Royals lead to 28-18 with 3:22 to go. The Warriors wouldn't go down easily though as they closed within six twice but the Royals finished the half with two free throws from Gaven Ramirez to push their lead to 35-27 at halftime.

It was a defensive struggle in the second half with the team exchanging baskets before the Warriors rallied to pull within 43-41 with 12:32 to go. The Royals had an instant response as Dashiell hit a jumper to start a 7-0 run as the Royals pulled back out to a 51-40 advantage midway through the second half. The Royals refused to let the Warriors back into the game as a jumper by Ramirez put them up 61-45 with 2:16 to go. The Royals defense shined forcing 18 turnovers as they won 63-50. Gaven Ramirez led with 13 points.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Canadian team Mount Royal University on Saturday, December 30 at 11:30 AM in the Darling Pavilion.
