It was a defensive battle throughout as a Jonah Felix three put the Royals up 9-5 but the Red Raiders came right back to take a 13-10 lead at the 14:26 mark. The Royals then answered on a 9-0 run led by five points from Cameron Dashiell to take a 19-13 advantage midway through the half. The Red Raiders answered to cut it to 19-16 but the Royals kept scoring as they went on an 8-0 run led by five points from Gaven Ramirez to take a 27-16 lead with 6:26 to go. The Red Raiders though called a timeout and regrouped as they finished the half on a 14-4 run to pull within 31-30 at halftime. The Royals lead was helped by the defense forcing eight turnovers.

The Red Raiders though came out of halftime continuing their momentum as they opened on a 9-3 run to take a 39-34 lead. The teams then exchanged baskets before Dashiell drained a three to put the Royals back up 44-43 with 9:05 remaining. From there the teams exchanged the lead before the Red Raiders went on a 6-0 run to regain a 55-50 advantage with 5:26 remaining. The Red Raiders would then extend their lead to 60-53 with 4:49 to go. The Royals didn't give up as they answered on a 9-2 run to tie it 62-62 on a big three from Dashiell. The Red Raiders then retook the lead before Dashiell answered with another layup to tie 64-64 with 21 seconds to go. The Royals then forced a turnover but Dashiell's buzzer-beater hit off the rim as the game went to overtime.

It looked like the Red Raiders were going to run away in the first overtime as they raced out to a 73-66 lead with 1:59 to go. The Royals defense then came up with several big turnovers to launch a 7-0 run with Tristan Williams scoring the tying basket with 48 seconds to go. The Red Raiders then had a chance to win it but their buzzer beater also fell short as the game headed to a second overtime. The teams exchanged the lead to start the second overtime before Felix nailed a big three to put the Royals up 77-75 with 2:09 to go. Calen Murray then scored a jumper to make it 79-75. The Royals defense then shutdown the Red Raiders with Dashiell coming up with a big tip on the inbound to prevent a game tying three point attempt as the Royals stunned the No. 13 Red Raiders 79-76 in an instant classic. Dashiell led the Royals with 18 points.

The Royals continue HIU Tournament action as they host SAGU American Indian on Friday, December 22 at 2:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
