Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Royals to 75-50 Victory over V-Hawks

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (7-3) won their fourth game in a row as they blew past the Viterbo University V-Hawks 68-48 on Tuesday evening to kick off the HIU Tournament in the Darling Pavilion.

With the game tied 4-4 early on the Royals went on a 10-0 run finished off by a jumper from Calen Murray to seize control with a 14-4 lead seven minutes into the game. The V-Hawks would battle back to get within 19-14 causing the Royals to take a timeout with 8:49 to go. The Royals answered strong out of the timeout as they went on a 6-0 run led by four points from Murray as they took a 25-14 advantage with 6:49 to go. The V-Hawks would pull back within 27-19 but the Royals hot shooting continued as Murray drained another three pointer to start a 10-3 run as the Royals went up 37-22 with 3:35 on the clock. The Royals then closed the half strong as Gaven Ramirez nailed a three to start an 8-0 run that was finished off by a Grant Sii triple as the Royals took a commanding 45-25 halftime lead. The Royals shot an impressive 56% from the field and outscored the V-Hawks 14-0 off turnovers.

The V-Hawks didn't give up in the second half as they came back to make it 53-38 with 14:30 remaining. The V-Hawks continued to hang around down 15 until Ramirez nailed a three to put the Royals lead back up to 58-40 midway through the second half. The Royals continued on from there as part of a 12-0 run led by five points from Jonah Felix as they extended their lead to 67-40 with 7:54 to go. The V-Hawks answered with a quick 6-0 run to pull within 67-46 with 5:58 left. The game continued to be low scoring in the second half as the Royals settled in defensively and would not allow the V-Hawks to mount any kind of comeback. Later with the score 69-50 the Royals closed on a 6-0 run finished off by a layup from LiWayne Richardson as they won big 75-50. Calen Murray led the Royals with 14 points.

The Royals continue HIU Tournament action as they face a big test against No. 13 Northwestern College on Wednesday, December 20 at 5:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
