Royals Can't Hold Early Lead Fall to No. 1 Yotes

Caldwell, ID - The Hope International University men's basketball team (3-3) dropped the opening game of a two game tournament as they fell 70-53 to the No. 1 The College of Idaho Yotes on Friday evening in Caldwell, ID.

Despite missing one of their top players the Royals came out and gave the Yotes all they could handle early on as they took a 12-6 lead led by five points from Jalen Shores with 12:02 remaining in the half. The Royals defense did a good job of shutting down the Yotes as they continued to lead with a Gaven Ramirez layup putting the Royals up 16-12 with 7:45 to go. The Royals couldn't hold the Yotes forever though as they answered on a 13-0 run to take a 25-16 lead with 3:34 left. The Yotes would go on to extend their lead to 31-19 but Paul Villela nailed a big three with :06 seconds left as the Royals pulled back within 31-22 at halftime.

The Royals wouldn't go down easily as they battled back to make it 37-31 on a Shores jumper with 14:01 to go. The teams then exchanged baskets before the Yotes seized control of the game with a 19-2 run to take a commanding 56-34 lead with 8:53 to go. The Yotes would go on to lead 65-45 but the Royals dug deep as Ramirez went on an 8-0 run to pull the Royals within 65-53 with 2:12 remaing. That's as close as they got though as the No. 1 Yotes pulled away to win 70-53. Ramirez led the Royals with 17 points.

The Royals continue play in Idaho as they take on Lewis-Clark State on Saturday, November 25 at 2:00 PM in Caldwell, ID.
