Royals Fall in Exhibition Game to D1 Roadrunners

Bakersfield, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team continued their season with a close hard fought 72-61 exhibition loss to the NCAA Division 1 Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners on Thursday evening in Bakersfield.

It was a slugfest in the first quarter as the Royals took their first lead off an Anyah Shamburger three to make it 5-4 after trailing 4-2. The Royals then outscored the Roadrunners 8-4 as they took a 13-8 lead off a big three by Shailissa Jarrett. The Roadrunners though answered on a 6-0 run to take a 14-13 lead at the end of the first. The Roadrunners continued to build on their lead in the second as they started on an 8-3 run to take a 22-16 lead. The Royals answered with a three by Shamburger to make it 22-19 but the Roadrunners closed the quarter on a 14-2 run to take a 36-21 lead at halftime.

The Royals weren't about to go down easily even if it was an exhibition game as they stormed out of the gates on a 17-2 run led by eight points from Jarrett as they tied the game 38-38. The Royals fought to stay close but the Roadrunners pulled back out to a 52-45 lead at the end of the third. The Royals kept up the press in the fourth as they opened on a 7-0 run led by four points from Shiane Talley to tie the game again 52-52. The Royals then retook the lead 56-55 on a three by Talley with 5:46 remaining. The Roadrunners would retake the lead but the Royals kept it close as a layup by Kennedy Pucci made it 62-61 with 1:57 remaining. The Royals looked to retake the lead but it was the Roadrunners who closed the game on a 10-0 run to win 72-61. Talley and Jarrett led the Royals with 16 points each. Talley finished with another double double (16 points, 14 rebounds).

The Royals return to regular season action at the Southern Oregon University Tournament on Thursday, November 9 at 6:30 PM as they take on host Southern Oregon in Ashland, OR.
