Cohen's Late Goal Leads Royals to First GSAC Tournament Championship

Atherton, CA – The Hope International men's soccer team (15-3-2) came from behind to win the GSAC Tournament Championship for the first time with a 2-1 win over The Master's University Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at Menlo College in Atherton, CA.

The Royals controlled the play in the first half as they outshot the Mustangs and created more opportunities. Tyler Moch had an early chance with a header but was unable to break the deadlock. Colm Cohen and Angel Magdaleno also forced the Mustangs keeper to make a pair of saves but the game continued scoreless. The Royals defense also did a good job of shutting down the Mustangs as they allowed just one shot on target with Milton Herrera coming up with the save to keep the game 0-0 at halftime.

The Royals continued to push forward in the second half but it was The Mustangs who found the back of the net to open the scoring in the 52nd minute and take a 1-0 lead. The Royals weren't about to give up and pushed for the equalizer and found it is Colm Cohen found Angel Magdaleno in the box who fired home in the 70th minute to tie it 1-1. From there both teams pushed for the winner and it was the Royals who found it as game one hero Cohen raced in on the left side on a solo run and finished past the keeper to put the Royals up 2-1 in the 86th minute. From there the Royals defense led by Herrera shutdown the Mustangs as they cliched their first ever GSAC Tournament Championship. Herrera played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves.

With the win the Royals punch their ticket to the NAIA Championships for the first time in program history. Tune into the NAIA selection show on Monday, November 13 at 11:00 AM PT.
