Royals Suffer First GSAC Loss to Lions

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International men's soccer team's (9-2-1, 1-1 GSAC) lost their first GSAC game as they fell 6-2 to the Vanguard University Lions on Saturday afternoon at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA.

The Lions came out with an aggressive style of play and were lucky to not have at least one player sent off. The Royals also looked like they might have won a penalty just several minutes in but the referee didn't give it and Diego Lopez came off injured to make things worse. The Lions then kept up the pressure and scored two goals to take a 2-0 lead. The Royals continued to battle as Leo Perez had two late chances but couldn't convert on either as the Royals went into halftime trailing 2-0.

The Royals fought back to start the second half as Luis Lira scored his first goal of the season on a wonderful free kick into the top corner from outside the box in the 47th minute to make it 2-1. T Royals continued to push forward but the Lions scored again to make it 3-1. Despite going down a man the Royals pulled a goal back in the 69th minute as Colm Cohen buried a penalty to make it 3-2. The Lions though took advantage of the situation and scored three more goals as they went on to win 6-2.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they travel to Arizona to take on Arizona Christian on Thursday, October 12 at 5:45 PM.
