Balanced Scoring and Strong Defense Help Royals Down Firebirds

San Marcos, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (7-1, 2-0 GSAC) won their seventh game in a row as they took down the University of Saint Katherine in a defensive battle 56-41 on Tuesday afternoon in San Marcos, CA

The Royals jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead off back to back three pointers from Rachel Capina and Keira McNamee. Their lead didn't last long though as the Firebirds went on a 14-0 run to take a 14-6 lead midway through the first. The Royals pulled back within four with :02 seconds left on a three by Shailissa Jarrett as they trailed 17-13 at the end of the first. The Royals then battled back in the second as they got within 19-16 before going on a 8-0 run to take a 24-19 advantage midway through the quarter. The Royals would then go on to take a 26-22 lead at halftime.

The Royals used a big third quarter to take control of the game as they opened the quarter on a 14-0 run to take a commanding 40-22 lead led by a balanced scoring attack and great defense. The Firebirds then answered with a basket to make it 40-24 but the Royals quickly score again on baskets by Aliyah Gonzalez and Casey Fust as they went on to take a 44-26 lead at the end of the third. The fourth quarter started off with the teams exchanging baskets before the Firebirds made a late charge to get within 11 at 52-41. The Royals didn't let them get closer though as Surie Camacho closed out the game with four points as the Royals prevailed 56-41.

The Royals continue GSAC play on the road as they head to Arizona to take on Arizona Christian University on Thursday, December 1 at 4:30 PM.
