Royals Homer Three Times in 5-2 Win

FULLERTON – Isaiah Lane, Matias Nolasco and Eddie Cotto each hit a solo home run and seven pitchers held visiting Westcliff to five hits in Hope International's 5-2 nonconference baseball victory at Amerige Park on Tuesday.

Lane went deep in the first inning, followed by Nolasco in the second and Cotto in the third to stake the Royals to a 3-0 lead. The Royals chased Westcliff starter Chris Gonzalez after just 1.1 innings.

HIU scored a run for the fourth straight inning as Royce Clayton doubled with one out in the fourth. Lane reached on a fielding error by the Warrior shortstop, allowing Clayton to score on the play.

The Royals increased their lead to 5-0 in the sixth, as Eric Valdivia, David Shackelford and Lane drew walks to go along with a Nolasco single.  Lane's free pass brought in Valdivia for the fifth run.

Cooper Bagby, Adan Young, Matt Wurmlinger and Nic Cortez kept the Warriors off the scoreboard through seven innings. Bagby, Young and Cortez each pitched 2.0 innings.

The Warriors rallied with a pair of runs in the eighth as Patrick Morgan doubled home Ian Carr and Riley Vogt to trim their deficit to 5-2. But Logan Long got a fly out to end the inning.

Jayson Thomas hurled a scoreless ninth for his second save. The Warriors had the tying run at the plate but Thomas struck out both Kailen Kimata and pinch hitter Tyler Nelson to close out the game.

Colby Moran, Nolasco and Clayton each had two hits to pace the HIU offense. Lane drove in a pair of runs while taking over the team lead with his sixth home run of the season.

Bagby picked up the win on the designated staff day to improve to 1-1. The Royals are now a season-high 19 games above .500 at 31-12 overall.

HIU looks to clinch the outright GSAC title on Friday when Park Gilbert visits for an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader.
