SURPRISE, Ariz. – Hope International men's volleyball grabbed the first set off of OUAZ, but lost the next three in a 21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-22 decision on Friday at Spirit Arena.
Alessandro Spendolini led the Royals with 17 kills and Jah'mi Jeter added 15. Spendolini had 11 digs for a double-double.
Sam D'Ambrosio handed out 30 assists and Hugo Gonzalez Gutierrez also scooped up 11 digs.
The Royals used a 4-0 run in set one to take a 16-12 lead, forcing an OUAZ timeout. The Spirit closed to within 22-20, but Jeter put down a kill and D'Ambrosio and Sean Seaman delivered a block on Thomas Plaskett to get to set point.
After an HIU service error, the Royals completed the 25-21 win on a kill from D'Ambrosio. HIU hit .333 in the first set, while OUAZ swung at just a .192 clip.
The Spirit picked up their offense from there, hitting .371, .438 and .379 over the next three sets. HIU countered at .480 in set four, but a 6-0 OUAZ run opened up a 19-15 lead. HIU got within two points, but Jack Hubbard finished the contests with a kill for the 25-22 triumph.
HIU concludes the season on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. match at Arizona Christian.
