Royals Fall in Extras to La Sierra

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Hope International baseball lost a doubleheader to La Sierra on Thursday by scores of 5-4 and 6-4.

The Royals fell to 13-8 overall and 4-2 in GSAC play.

In game one, HIU went 14 innings before giving up the game-winning run on an error.

HIU took a 1-0 lead in the first and extended the lead with two runs in the fifth. Eddie Cotto had an RBI single and came home on another Golden Eagle error. The Royals added a run in the eighth on Colby Moran's RBI single.

Franky Lopez posted another solid outing, going 7.1 innings and allowing just four hits and two runs (one earned). He struck out five and walked only one.

But the Golden Eagles chased him in the eighth after Fabian Dominguez reached on an error, then scored on Barry Manjivar's triple to right field.

The Golden Eagles plated the tying runs off two HIU relievers, aided by another HIU error.

Justin Allen gave up the unearned run in the 14th to take the loss and fall to 1-1.

Preston Allen scored HIU's second run in the fifth, but La Sierra took a 6-2 lead in the bottom half as Matthew Pontes tripled to bring in Ethan Gibbs, and Logan Kim's sacrifice fly scored Pontes.

The Royals attempted a comeback in the seventh as Allen's groundout brought in Evan Jaquez, who led off with an infield single. Cotto later scored on a passed ball, but Jaime Silva earned the complete game victory for La Sierra. He scattered six hits and gave up the four runs (three earned).
