Baseball Drops Two at OUAZ

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Hope International baseball team lost a pair of tough games at OUAZ on Friday, falling 10-9 and 6-4 in GSAC action.

The Royals are now 19-11 overall and 10-4 in GSAC play.

Game 1 – OUAZ 10, Hope International 9
OUAZ plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the 10-9 victory. Two HIU errors aided the OUAZ comeback. Evan Mendoza's singled with the bases loaded ended the game.

HIU took a 4-3 lead through two innings and led 5-4 after four.

OUAZ scored three times in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead.

The Royals made it 7-6 in the sixth on Hunter Essang's RBI single. They took an 8-7 lead in the seventh, benefiting from three Spirit errors in the inning.

HIU added a run in the eighth on Eddie Cotto's sacrifice fly for a 9-7 advantage.

OUAZ trimmed the deficit to 9-8 in the eighth.

Franky Lopez went 5.0 innings for the Royals. James Williams took the loss after pitching one-plus innings. Kasey Regala earned the win for the Spirit after tossing 2.0 scoreless innings.

Game 2 – OUAZ 6, Hope International 4
OUAZ scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to hold off the charging Royals, which plated four runs in the sixth but could not complete the comeback.

Evan Mendoza homered to lead off the fourth for a 1-0 lead. Chaz Clemons had a run-scoring double and Matthew Carter's RBI single made it 3-0 Spirit.

The Royals got the first two outs in the fifth, but two straight singles and a stolen base put two runners into scoring position. Isaiah Nava cashed both runners in on a double down the left field line, which removed HIU starter Josh Landry from the game.

Clemons doubled down the right field line to bring in Nava for the 6-0 lead.

The Royals rallied in the sixth, loading the bases on an Isaiah Lane single, Essang single and Colby Moran walk. OUAZ took out starting pitcher Micah Del Rio in favor of Tyler Johnson. The move seemed to work as Johnson got the first two outs, but Spencer Davis hit a grand slam to pull the Royals within 6-4.

However, Johnson got the final out in the sixth, and allowed just a two-out single in the seventh to pick up his third save of the season.

Landry allowed nine hits and six runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss as he fell to 6-2. Del Rio earned the win after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing three runs with seven strikeouts.

The two teams compete in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m.
