FULLERTON – Nicole Chuang poured in a team-high 20 points and top-seeded Hope International scored 33 fourth quarter points to run away with an 81-56 victory over No. 4 seed Benedictine Mesa in the semifinals of the GSAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Darling Pavilion.
Chuang canned five three-pointers and added a pair of steals as the Royals (23-4) reached the GSAC championship game for the second time under head coach Jessica Case.
Amira Austin added 14 points and 14 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. Jada Long shot 8 of 8 from the free throw line en route to 13 points in 13 minutes off the bench, while Angelina De Leon also reached double figures with 10 points.
Dre Javier dished out eight assists with no turnovers in 33 minutes of action.
The Royals shot 43.5 (10 of 23) percent from three-point range. HIU outscored the Redhawks 33-17 in the fourth quarter, shooting a sizzling 62.5 (10 of 16) percent.
HIU led 40-27 at halftime, but BENU cut the deficit to nine points at the end of three quarters.
Olivia Arvallo, who scored a game-high 28 points, hit a three-pointer to trim the HIU lead to 50-42 with 9:29 remaining. But the Royals sped away on an 11-0 run – six points coming from Austin and four more via Chuang on a four-point play.
The Royals suddenly led 61-42 with 5:33 to play, as they held the Redhawks scoreless for over four minutes.
Back-to-back triples from Chuang ballooned HIU's lead to 67-44. Chuang scored 12 points and Austin added eighth in the final quarter.
HIU had a solid second quarter as well, outscoring BENU 24-18 on 53.3 (8 of 15) percent shooting, including 4 of 7 from distance. The Royals led by 20 at 33-13 on Chuang's layup, but the Redhawks climbed back into it after outscoring HIU 14-5.
The 23 wins for HIU is tied for third-most in a single-season in program history.
The Royals seek their third GSAC Tournament title when they host third-seeded Arizona Christian in the championship game on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m.
