GILBERT, Ariz. – Sixth-ranked Hope International men's basketball unleashed a balanced scoring attack in Thursday's 94-86 road victory at Park Gilbert, as six players scored in double figures.
Led by Nick Hopkins with a team-high 18 points, the Royals shot exactly 50 (34 of 68) percent in improving to 22-5 overall and 12-3 in the Great Southwest Athletic Conference.
CJ Fisher and Aman Haynes contributed 17 points each, Addy G'Bye and Darvelle Wyatt had 13 apiece, and Jorren Edmonds had 10.
The scoring distribution offset 17 three-point makes by the Buccaneers.
HIU also dominated on the glass, owning a 45-24 rebounding advantage.
The Royals got off to a great start, leading 13-2 as G'Bye and Fisher connected for three-pointers. The Buccaneers narrowed the deficit to four points on several occasions, but the Royals pushed the lead back to 34-25 on another G'Bye triple. But a 6-0 Park Gilbert run, capped off by a Tanner Pate trey, closed the deficit to 34-31.
HIU settled for a 44-40 lead at intermission.
Both teams shot over 50 percent in the second half with the Buccaneers continuing their hot shooting from the perimeter.
The home team took a 48-47 lead following an Isaac Wood three-pointer, the only time HIU would trail during the game. Wyatt responded with a layup as the Royals retook a 49-48 lead with 15:57 remaining. HIU turned that into an 8-0 run, leading 55-48 on a Fisher three-point play at the 14:10 mark.
The Buccaneers got as close as 65-60 following a Luke Olmstead triple, but the Royals held strong and eventually got the lead into double digits.
HIU is tied atop the GSAC standings with Arizona Christian at 12-3.
The Royals close out the regular season on Saturday at OUAZ with a 1:00 p.m. (PT) tip.
