SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Hope International beach volleyball went toe-to-toe with the nation's second-ranked team, coming up just short against Corban in a 3-2 loss on Saturday at the TMU Beach Volleyball Courts.

The ninth-ranked Royals demonstrated they belong among elite company. Jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Royals were unable to pick up the clinching third point.

Rita Nua and Cozette Zimmermann started HIU out in the right direction, stamping a 21-17, 21-12 victory on the Warrior duo of Emily Blagg and Erin Scott for the 1-0 lead. HIU also won at the twos, as Sabrina Galassi and Bryce Swain toppled Gabi Engels and Allyson Reid. After a marathon first set loss, Galassi and Swain recovered to win by scores of 26-28, 21-13, 15-7.

Corban picked up its first point on line three, as Alexis Adeboden and Cammie Masanda throttled Maci Hendry and Carmelina Infante, 21-11, 21-9.

HIU's No. 1 pairing – Kyla Dothard and Lole Mamea – battled Emma Bischoff and Emmi Marks in a close affair, but fell 21-18, 21-16 as the match was tied at 2-2.

The deciding point came down to the fives. Phoebe Sebby and Katie Barclay took Corban's duo of Stacie Alexander and Katie Fraley to three sets, falling 21-17, 19-21, 15-9.

The Royals suffered their first loss of the season to fall to 3-1. The Warriors improved to 2-1.
