SYLVANIA, Ohio – Hope International men's volleyball fell by set scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 to No. 4 Georgetown College on day two of the Lourdes Gray Wolves Invitational on Friday at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
The Royals dropped to 0-2 on the season while the Tigers improved to 1-1.
For the second straight match, Jah'mi Jeter led HIU in kills as he finished with 12. Hugo Gonzalez Gutierrez added eight kills and a match-high tying eight digs to go along with two aces and two block assists.
Sam D'Ambrosio handed out 16 assists as the Royals hit .143 (28-15-91) as a team.
Georgetown swung at a .279 (47-18-104) clip.
Three Tigers finished in double figure kills, led by Santino Zucchiatti with 13.
In set one, HIU held an early 5-2 lead and remained in front at 10-8. However, Georgetown reeled off four straight points to take a 12-10 advantage, and never relinquished the lead. A 7-2 Tiger run – helped by a pair of Charlie Nelson solo blocks – opened up a 19-12 cushion.
Two straight HIU errors polished off the 25-17 set victory for Georgetown.
HIU led early again in set two, but the Tigers leaned on a 5-0 run for a 7-3 lead. The Royals notched four straight points to tie the score at 7-7, bookended by Jeter and Gonzalez Gutierrez kills. HIU clung to a 12-11 lead, and ran off three straight points to extend the advantage to 15-13, with Sean Seaman and Jeter combining to stuff an attempt by Kristjan Unt.
After Georgetown tied the score at 15-15, HIU broke away on a 4-0 run – three on Jeter kills – to retake a 19-15 lead. The Royals appeared in control as a Tiger attack error extended the lead to 21-16.
But the Tigers notched six of the next seven points to tie the score at 22-22. Zucchiatti had three kills during the run.
HIU took a 23-22 lead following a Zucchiatti service error. However, Georgetown scored the final three points for the 25-23 triumph.
The Royals fell behind early for the first time in the match, as Georgetown built a 10-3 lead in set three on the heels of a 5-0 run.
HIU crept within four points on several occasions – getting to 19-15 following a Travis Donahue kill. HIU scored three straight points on Georgetown attack errors to close the gap to 20-18. HIU trailed just 23-21, but the Tigers ended the match on two straight kills.
Georgetown hit .297 (18-7-37) in set three, while HIU managed just .138 (8-4-29) efficiency.
The Royals conclude the Lourdes Gray Wolves Invitational on Saturday with an 8:30 a.m. (PT) contest against No. 15 William Penn.
