Hot Shooting Firestorm Wins Battle of Top 10 Teams

GLENDALE, Ariz. – No. 9 Arizona Christian shot 63 percent in an 82-57 triumph over 10th-ranked Hope International in Great Southwest Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Thursday at the Events Center.

The Firestorm made 15 of 21 shots – 71.4 percent – in the second half alone to turn a 10-point halftime lead into a rout. HIU's six-game winning streak was snapped, as the Royals dropped 15-3 overall and 5-1 in the GSAC. ACU improved to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Freshman Aman Haynes led the Royals with 18 points on 9 of 14 shooting. He also had a team-high seven rebounds. Nick Hopkins had 11 points and Addy G'Bye contributed nine.

The Royals struggled to make shots in the second half, finishing at 18.7 (6 of 32) percent.  They shot just 32.2 (19 of 59) percent for the game.

ACU got a game-high 19 points from Shaud Bradley off the bench.

The Royals hung tough in the early going as they trailed just 11-10 following a Haynes layup at the 14:17 mark. But the Firestorm posted a 20-5 run, hitting eight of 11 shots during that seven-minute stretch.

Despite the 31-15 deficit, the Royals shaved off a good chunk by getting to the free throw line. Two CJ Fisher free throws pulled HIU within 35-30 with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. But five straight points from Bradley and a basket by Amechi Chukwu increased ACU's lead to 42-32 at halftime.

ACU hit its first four shots to begin the second half and maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

The Royals continue their Arizona roadtrip with a 1:00 p.m. game against Embry-Riddle on Saturday.
