Royals Fall at No. 11 The Master’s

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Hope International women's volleyball dropped a 25-12, 25-16, 25-19 decision against No. 11 The Master's on Friday evening at the MacArthur Center.

The Royals fell to 5-5 and 1-2 in the GSAC, while the Mustangs improved to 10-1 and 3-0.

Three Royals tied for the kills lead as Manaia Mamea, Lole Mamea and Savannah Salter all had four each. Annie Nugent posted a match-high 14 digs.

Setter Rita Nua led the team with 11 assists and Alyssa Bishop had eight.

For the Mustangs, Isabella Amet topped all players with 13 kills and 13 digs for a double-double.

HIU hit .010 for the match, while TMU swung at a .252 clip.

TMU opened the contest with four straight points and led 10-4 in the early going. The Mustangs widened the lead to 14-6 and eventually extended the advantage to 20-10.

The Mustangs hit .342 in the set as they took the 25-12 win.

In set two, TMU got off to another quick start, leading 6-2 after a pair of early service aces. The Royals battled back to 8-5 after a kill from Vianka Martinez and a double block by Lauren Cummings and Manaia Mamea.

Three straight HIU points closed the gap to 10-8, and HIU hovered within three points until 14-11. But a 5-2 Mustang run opened up a 19-13 cushion.

HIU scored two straight to pull within 19-15. However, the Mustangs scored six of the final seven points to earn the 25-16 triumph.

The Royals fired out to a 5-0 lead in set three with Cummings blasting a pair of kills from the middle. TMU responded with a 5-1 run to whittle the deficit to 6-5.

HIU still led at 10-9, but TMU wrestled the lead away with three consecutive points on kills from Macy Gebhards, Amet and McKenna Brady. HIU trailed just 15-14 following a TMU attack error, but the home team created some distance after a 5-2 run.

Trailing 20-16, the Royals got kills from Manaia Mamea and Madison Schweitzer to pull within 21-18. But the Mustangs closed out the match with four of the next five points to take the 25-19 victory.

HIU returns to action on Friday, September 26, hosting Park Gilbert in its GSAC home opener. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
