Top Ranked Mustangs Too Much For Royals in Battle on Senior Night

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International men's volleyball team (15-7, 6-4 GSAC) fought hard but couldn't overcome the No. 1 Master's University Mustangs as they fell 3-0 on Wednesday evening at home on Senior Day.

The Mustangs took the early lead in the first set but the Royals kept it close as back to back kills from Sean Seaman and Coby Prowse made it 7-6. The Mustangs though would seize control as they took a 12-7 lead. Cole Oliver tried to keep the Royals in the set with a big kill to make it 14-9 but the Mustangs pulled away to win 25-16 and take a 1-0 lead. The Royals tried to fight back in the second set as a block by Damon Potter tied it 6-6. The Mustangs pulled out to a 10-7 lead but the Royals tried to keep it close with kills from Julian Zavala, Coby Prowse and Oliver to get within 15-13. That's as close as they got though as the Mustangs pulled away to win 25-16 and take a 2-0 lead.

The Royals looked to stay alive in the third set as a kill by Potter gave them an early 11-8 advantage. The top ranked Mustangs though came racing back to take a 15-12 lead. This time the Royals came right back after a timeout on a 5-1 run led by three kills from Oliver to retake a 17-16 advantage. The Mustangs quickly called a timeout and would rally to take a 21-20 lead. The Royals didn't give up as another Oliver kill put them up 23-22. The teams would then exchange points with an error by the Mustangs giving the Royals set point but the Mustangs would close out the game to win 26-24 and win 3-0. Oliver led the Royals with 13 kills while Kyler Tufuga led with 25 assists.

With the loss and Benedictine Mesa defeating Arizona Christian the Royals will be the No. 3 seed in the GSAC Championships and will play No. 2 Benedictine Mesa on Monday, April 14 in Mesa, AZ.
