Royals Sweep Redhawks to Open Final GSAC Homestand

Fullerton, CA - The No. 18 Hope International University softball team (31-9, 14-4 GSAC) got back on the winning track as they swept a doubleheader to open up a four game GSAC series against Benedictine Mesa winning 11-0 and 3-1 on Friday afternoon at Fullerton College in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Kaitlyn Maaske (15-3) got the start and picked up her fifteenth win throwing a complete game 5 inning shutout allowing just three hits while walking one. Breanna Lucero led the Royals offense going 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs.

The Royals quickly broke open the game in the bottom of the first as back to back doubles by Asia Chacon and Alyssa Castaneda put the Royals up 3-0. Two batters later Lucero ripped an RBI double to left to make it 4-0. Karlie Bilbrey then followed with an infield RBI single to increase the Royals lead to 5-0. Then with two outs and the bases loaded Vivian Little was hit by the pitch to force across another run and make it 6-0.

The Redhawks looked for an answer but Maaske held them at bay while the Royals offense kept scoring. Lucero would drive in another run on a sac bunt to make it 7-0 in the top of the second. The Royals then struck for four more in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded Chacon drove in another run on a fielder's choice to make it 8-0. Castaneda then delivered again to make it 9-0 before Lucero and Bilbrey delivered back to back RBI singles to give the Royals an 11-0 lead. Maaske would then retire the Redhawks in order in the bottom of the fifth as the Royals won by mercy rule.

Game 2:
Alexis Galvan (8-6) picked up her eighth win as she threw a complete game 7 innings allowing just one run on three hits while walking one and striking out four. Sarah Reisler led the Royals offense going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Galvan put the Redhawks down in order to start the game while the Royals jumped on top in the bottom of the first with Chacon ripping a two out RBI double to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Galvan retired the first 12 Redhawks she faced in order while the Royals offense scored again in the bottom of the second. This time Reisler came through with a sac fly to increase the lead to 2-0. Natalie Corrales then ripped a two out RBI double to right field in the bottom of the third as the Royals took a 3-0 lead.

The Redhawks would finally break through in the top of the fifth to make it 3-1 but Galvan rebounded to retire the next two Redhawks batters with the tying run at the plate to limit the damage. Galvan then shutdown the Redhawks in the top of the sixth, but they tried to rally in the top of the seventh as they brought the tying run to the plate. Galvan wasn't bothered as she induced a double play to end the inning and seal the Royals win.

The Royals wrap up their GSAC regular season schedule against Benedictine Mesa with a doubleheader on Friday, April 11 at 12:00 PM at Fullerton College in Fullerton, CA.
