Royals Rebound in Surprise Defeating Spirit 3-1

Surprise, AZ - The No. 15 Hope International men's volleyball team (13-6, 4-3 GSAC) bounced back from yesterday's surprising loss with a 3-1 victory over the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit on Saturday afternoon on the road in Surprise, AZ.

Needing a win the Royals made several adjustments from the prior game but the first set was a battle as the Royals took an early 8-7 lead with back to back kills from Cole Oliver and Sean Seaman. The teams would then trade the lead as the Spirit went up 17-15. The Royals would make it 18-17 but the Spirit would close out the set to win 25-18 and take a 1-0 lead. The Royals looked to answer in the second set as a kill by Coby Prowse put the Royals up 8-7. The teams would then trade leads again with back to back aces by Kyler Tufuga giving the Royals a 13-11 advantage. The Spirit would battle back this time as they went on to lead 19-16. This time the Royals came from behind as Quentin Roberts put the Royals up 22-21. The Spirit would comeback to go up 25-24 but the Royals survived as they won in extra points with Oliver delivering the set winning kill 31-29 to tie the game 1-1.

The Spirit looked to bounce back in the third set as they raced out to an early 10-3 lead. The Royals regrouped after a timeout and slowly but surely got back into the game with a 6-2 run led by two kills each from Oliver and Tufuga to get within 18-17. The Spirit answered to increase their lead to 21-19 but that didn't stop the Royals as they came storming back on a 6-0 run with back to back kills from Oliver and Tufuga giving the Royals a 25-21 win and a 2-1 lead. The Spirit looked to stay alive in the fourth set as they took an early lead but the Royals quickly took control with a 5-1 run finished off by a kill from Oliver set up by Tufuga to take a 15-11 lead. The Spirit tried to keep up as they made it 18-14 but the Royals weren't interested in any comebacks as they went on a 6-1 run led by two more kills from Oliver to go up 24-15 as they went on to win 25-17 and 3-1. Oliver led the Royals with 32 kills and Sergio Garcia led with 29 assists.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host Park Gilbert on Friday, April 4 at 6:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
