Royals Shutout DIII Bulldogs Behind Maaske Complete Game

Redlands, CA - The No. 17 Hope International University softball team (5-0) won their fifth game in a row as they shutout the NCAA Division III Redlands University Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in Redlands, CA.

Kaitlyn Maaske (3-0) picked up the win with a 7 inning complete game shutout allowing just four hits while walking one and striking out six. Lily Hernandez drove in the only run of the game to power the offense.

The game was a pitcher's duel as neither team were able to generate many hits. The Bulldogs threatened in the bottom of the third with back to back two single but Maaske was up to the task inducing a groundout to end the threat. The Royals meanwhile got their first hit of the game in the top of the fourth but were unable to convert as the game remained scoreless.

Maaske continued to dazzle on the mound for the Royals as she put the Bulldogs down in order in the bottom of the fourth the Royals then found the breakthrough in the top of the fifth. The Royals would load the bases with back to back singles and a hit batter for Hernandez who delivered an RBI groundout to put the Royals up 1-0. That's all the offense Maaske would need as she put the Bulldogs down in order again in the bottom of the fifth and then worked around an error and a single in the next two innings to retire the side and seal a 1-0 win.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Simpson for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 14 at Fullerton College in Fullerton, CA.
