Royals Sweep Red Hawks to Kick off NorCal Road Trip

Redding, CA - The Hope International men's volleyball team (4-1) won their fourth game in a row and pulled off their second sweep in a row as they swept the Simpson University Red Hawks 3-0 to kick off a three game road trip in Northern California on Wednesday evening in Redding, CA.

The Royals got off to a quick 4-0 start with a kill and service ace from Coby Prowse and a kill from Quentin Roberts both set up by Tyler Tufuga to take the early lead. The Red Hawks kept right on the Royals heels as they got within 10-9. The Royals answered strong with a kill by Sean Seaman and another ace from Prowse to take a 12-9 advantage as they went on to lead 16-12. The Red Hawks would come back to tie it 20-20 but the Royals made sure to never give up the lead as they went on a 4-0 run highlighted by a double block by Tufuga and Seaman and a kill by Seaman to take a 24-20 lead as they went on to close out the set 25-21 and take a 1-0 lead. 

The second set started off back and forth as the teams traded leads before Tufuga set up Santiago Mantovani to spark a 7-2 run to put the Royals ahead 11-7. The Red Hawks kept battling as they pulled within 14-13 but the Royals regrouped after a timeout getting big kills from Mantovani and Julian Zavala as well as a service ace from Cole Oliver to take a 17-14 lead. The Red Hawks would again comeback to make things difficult for the Royals at 20-19 but the Royals closed out the set on a 5-2 run to win 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead.

The Red Hawks looked to keep the game alive in the third set as they took an early lead but back to back kills by Oliver put the Royals ahead 4-3. The Red Hawks kept it close at 8-7 but the Royals answered strong with kills from Prowse and Oliver as they extended their lead to 12-7. The Red Hawks would make it 12-10 before the Royals seized control with a 7-2 run led by two kills from Oliver to take a 19-12 lead. The Red Hawks regrouped after a timeout to get within 19-16 but the Royals held strong with two more kills from Oliver as they went on to win 25-20 and 3-0. Oliver and Prowse led the Royals with 10 kills each while Tufuga led with 26 assists.

The Royals continue their Northern California road trip as they head to the Central Valley to take on UC Merced on Friday, February 14 at 6:00 PM in Merced, CA.
