FULLERTON – Hope International women's basketball shot 57 percent over the final 15 minutes to outlast OUAZ, 84-75, in overtime on Saturday at Darling Pavilion.
The Royals improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the Great Southwest Athletic Conference. The Spirit fell to 4-5 and 0-3 in conference play.
After shooting just 3 of 23 from three-point range through three quarters, the Royals canned 7 of their final 10 attempts from distance.Â
Senior Aliyah Gonzalez tied her career high with five three-pointers, hitting four of those in the fourth period and overtime. She scored nine of her season-high 18 points in the fourth to help the Royals overcome a 13-point deficit.
HIU outscored OUAZ 25-13 in the fourth to send the game into overtime. The home team dominated the extra period, hitting 6 of 8 shots and limiting the Spirit to 2 of 7 shooting.
Senior Amira Austin posted her third double-double of the season and sixth of her career with 20 points and 12 rebounds. She made 8 of 13 from the floor and added a pair of blocked shots. Sophomore Dre Javier added a season-best 19 points on 8 of 13 shooting while tallying four assists and two steals.
Nicole Chuang hit three big triples en route to 17 points. Two of her threes gave the Royals a one-point lead in the fourth period.
HIU committed just eight turnovers – the second-fewest in a game this season – and forced OUAZ into 16 miscues. The Royals edged the Spirit 19-5 in points off turnovers.
OUAZ received a game-high 24 points from Brianna Humphries off the bench. Tiana Sledge provided a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Humphries scored seven points in the third quarter to help the Spirit open up a 56-44 lead. OUAZ shot 57 percent in the third quarter, including 3 of 4 from distance.
Sledge made one of two free throws to give OUAZ a 61-48 lead – matching its largest cushion of the contest – with 7:28 to go in the fourth.
But the Royals scored on their next seven possessions, including four straight three-pointers – three by Gonzalez and the other from Jada Long. Following Chuang's back-to-back triples, the Royals completed a 19-5 run for a 67-66 lead with 3:10 remaining in regulation.
Sledge got inside for a layup to give OUAZ a 68-67 lead, but Javier responded with a bucket to put HIU up by one. Jana Solee made one of two free throws with 27 ticks left to tie the score at 69-69. The Royals had two chances to win the game in regulation but misfired.
The two teams traded buckets and were tied 73-73 when Chuang hit a layup, got fouled and completed the three-point play for a 76-73 HIU lead. Long''s steal on the next OUAZ possession allowed her to go coast-to-coast for a basket, and Austin followed with another three-point play after drawing a foul on Charli Cook.
HIU trailed for most of the first half. The Royals led 8-7 at the six-minute mark, but OUAZ used an 11-2 run to lead 18-10 at the end of one quarter. Humphries extended the lead to 26-13 on a layup with 7:14 to go in the second.
However, the Royals answered with a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to 28-26. Austin scored six of her points during the run and Jamelia Coleman added a three-pointer.
The Spirit tallied the final five points of the quarter to lead 35-28 at the break.
HIU returns to action on Friday, December 12 at La Verne for a 7:00 p.m. game.
