FULLERTON – Freshman Aman Haynes posted his first career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, leading Hope International men's basketball to a 79-49 win over Nobel on Tuesday at Darling Pavilion.
Haynes made 6 of 10 floor shots, including a career-best 3 of 3 from distance, notching double-digit points for the eighth straight game.
Junior Colin Weems turned in a solid performance, earning career-highs in points (12), assists (6) and steals (4). He hit a pair of three-pointers and knocked down 4 of 8 shots overall.
Darvelle Wyatt added nine points, while CJ Fisher and Addy G'Bye scored seven apiece. Fisher was a pest on defense with four steals and a blocked shot.
The Royals shot 50.0 (28 of 56) percent overall, including 9 of 21 from three-point range. HIU scored 21 points off of 16 Nobel turnovers.
The Knights were led by Sparsh Kadyan with nine points. They shot 31.0 (18 of 58) percent from the field.
HIU held a modest 14-10 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half, but then exploded on an 18-0 run – started by a Weems three-pointer. Haynes, who had seven points during the run, connected on a triple to widen HIU's lead to 32-10 at the 7:38 mark.
The Knights finally broke a near six-minute scoring drought on a Seven Ferguson jumper.
HIU extended its lead to 25 as a Haynes three made the score 41-25. Fisher canned a trey with 12 seconds remaining to give the Royals a 44-21 lead at halftime.
The HIU lead climbed to 35 points as G'Bye's three upped the ledger to 69-34 midway through the second half.
Aaron Hughes hit a three-pointer with 4:45 to play as the Royals led 78-44.
HIU is now 8-1 on the season, while Nobel fell to 1-7.
The Royals turn their attention to their GSAC home opener on Saturday against OUAZ. Tip time is 2:00 p.m.
