FULLERTON – Hope International and La Sierra tangled in GSAC women's volleyball action on Wednesday at Darling Pavilion, and the Golden Eagles prevailed in a five-set thriller – 25-17, 24-26, 13-25, 25-18, 17-15.
The Royals (6-8, 2-5 GSAC) lost their second consecutive five-set match and third in a row overall. The Golden Eagles improved to 3-8 overall and 2-7 in the GSAC.
Manaia Mamea and Lole Mamea tied for match-high honors with 14 kills apiece. Olivia Samaniego added nine kills and four blocks.
Libero Annie Nugent scooped up a career-high 29 digs. Alyssa Bishop and Rita Nua tallied 27 and 19 assists, respectively.
Both teams had eight service aces. For the Royals, Manaia Mamea and Macy Thornburg fired three aces each.
HIU hit .103 for the match, with La Sierra coming in at a .105 clip.
The Golden Eagles committed just seven attack errors in the three sets they won. In sets two and three –both Royals victories – La Sierra totaled a combined 22 attack errors.
In set one, HIU led 10-9 but the Golden Eagles utilized a 10-1 run to take a commanding 19-11 lead. Samaniego, who had three kills in the set, pulled HIU within 22-16. But the Golden Eagles feasted on 10 HIU attack errors in the frame to take the 25-17 victory.
The Royals sprinted out to an 11-5 lead in set two and extended the advantage to 17-9. But La Sierra took the lead courtesy of a 13-3 run, with Hailey Frary involved on four straight block assists.
La Sierra had set point at 24-22, but Lole Mamea reeled off three straight kills to give HIU a 25-24 lead and force a Golden Eagle timeout. Manaia Mamea slammed one home to give the Royals the 26-24 victory.
HIU dominated in set three after holding La Sierra to -.152 hitting with 12 attack errors. Leading 14-11, HIU scored 10 consecutive points with Thornburg at the service line – two aces coming during the run.
La Sierra held a slim 8-7 lead in set four, but went on a 6-2 run to open up a five-point advantage. The Royals got three kills from Manaia Mamea during an 8-3 Royals run as the score was knotted at 17-17. However, the Golden Eagles answered with six straight points, and finished off the 25-18 win on a Kaylee Torres service ace.
The Golden Eagles hit .333 in set five to take the 17-15 win. La Sierra pushed out to a 7-2 lead and remained in front at 10-5, when HIU scored three straight points, including two Lole Mamea kills. La Sierra appeared in control at 14-10, but HIU staved off four match points. Manaia Mamea posted a kill and service ace, Kat Schwab pounded a kill, and a bad set by La Sierra knotted the score at 14-14.
The two teams were tied again at 15-15. La Sierra closed out the match on a Sakura Pangelinan kill and a block assist. The Royals hit .222 (11-5-27) in set five.
