Royals Shock Ninth Ranked Mustangs 82-64 to Open GSAC Play

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (13-2, 1-0 GSAC) won their eighth game in a row as they shocked the No. 9 The Master's University Mustangs in an 82-64 upset to open GSAC play on Saturday afternoon in the Darling Pavilion.

The Mustangs came out strong as they opened up an early 16-5 advantage with 16:28 remaining. The Royals then sprung to life as a Jonah Felix layup sparked an 11-0 run with five points from Cameron Dashiell and four from Nick Hopkins to tie the game 16-16 with 13:16 left. The Mustangs would answer to regain a 19-16 lead but once again the Royals answered with a 9-0 run finished off by a big three from Jozelle Carter Jr to put the Royals up 25-19 with 9:09 to go. The Mustangs weren't done either as they rallied to tie it 28-28 with 4:48 to go. Dashiell then knocked down a huge three to give the Royals back the lead as they closed out the half on a 10-3 run to take a 38-31 halftime lead. The Royals shot an impressive 54% from the field in the first half while holding the Mustangs to 34.5%.

The Mustangs looked for an answer in the second half as they pulled with 38-34 but that's as close as the Royals let them get as they answered on a 14-2 run led by five points from Josh Hardiman to give the Royals a commanding 52-36 lead with 11:49 to go. The Mustangs kept battling as they made it 58-50 with 8:34 to go but the Royals quickly answered as Sebastian Castro dished off to Felix who nailed a big three to start a 12-4 run as the Royals stretched their advantage to 71-54 with 6:34 left. The Royals would keep scoring as Dashiell put up four more points to give the Royals a game high 82-60 lead as they went on to win in a stunning 82-64 upset. Dashiell led the Royals with 17 points off the bench while four more Royals finished in double figures as Grant Sii had 15, Hopkins and Felix finished with 12 each while Carter Jr had 10. The Royals win was helped by holding the defending two time GSAC Player of the Year Kaleb Lowry to just three points and eight rebounds.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host Benedictine Mesa on Thursday, January 9 at 7:30 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
