Seeley Dominant as Royals Knockout Grenadiers 12-1

Lewiston, ID – The No. 10 Hope International University baseball team (42-16) staved off elimination for the second game in a row at the Avista NAIA World Series as they took down the crowd favorite and tenth seeded Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers 12-1 on Monday afternoon on Memorial Day at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID.

Trey Seeley (10-3) was dominant as he turned in his best performance of the season scattering three hits over 8 shutout innings while striking out 11 on 119 pitches. David Rivera led the Royals offense going 3-for-6 with two home runs and 3 RBIs. JJ Cruz also went 4-for-4 with two home runs and 2 RBIs.

It was a pitcher's duel early on as the Royals turned to Seeley on short rest after he pitched four innings in the Royals opener on Friday. The game was scoreless and hitless through three innings until Alex Moreno launched a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth just over the right field wall to put the Royals up 1-0. The Royals then got back to back singles before a sac bunt put runners on second and third with nobody out. Derek Sims then lined an RBI single to left field to make it 2-0. Two batters later Amari Bartee raced out an infield single to drive in another run and put the Royals up 3-0.

Seeley continued to shutdown the Grenadiers as he held them hitless through four innings. David Rivera then smashed his first home run of the World Series to left field in the top of the fifth to increase the Royals lead to 4-0. The Grenadiers would finally get a hit with one out in the bottom of the fifth and then an error to put two runners on but Seeley got a flyout and a strikeout to end the inning. The Royals offense then broke open the game in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out. The Royals then made it 6-0 on a walk and a hit batter before Ryan Lamastra grounded a two run single through the left side to increase the Royals lead to 8-0.

Seeley meanwhile continued to dazzle as he put down the Grenadiers in order in the bottom of the seventh while the Royals offense continued to score. This time it was Cruz who launched a solo home run to right field in the top of the eighth to make it 9-0. Seeley then worked around a two out single in the bottom half to keep his shutout intact. The Royals offense wasn't done either as Rivera crushed his second home run of the game with one out in the top of the ninth to increase the Royals lead to 11-0. Two batters later Cruz blasted his second home run of the game to make it 12-0. The Grenadiers would finally plate a run in the bottom of the ninth to make it 12-1 but the Royals weren't about to allow any comebacks as Sakemi Sato struckout the final batter with runners on second and third and two down to seal a 12-1 win.

With the win the Royals stay alive and will take on the loser of Reinhardt and Arizona Christian on Tuesday, May 28 at 11:05 AM at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID.
