Royals Can't Hold Late Lead Fall 7-5 to Eagles to Open World Series

Lewiston, ID – The No. 10 Hope International University baseball team (40-16) couldn't hold on to a late lead as they fell 7-5 to the Reinhardt University Eagles in the second game of the Avista NAIA World Series on Friday afternoon at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID

Trey Seeley got the start and pitched 4 innings allowing just one unearned run on five hits while walking two and striking out two. Boom Ward (0-1) took the loss in relief allowing two runs, one earned on three hits while striking out one. JJ Cruz and Ryan Maciel led the Royals offense with both going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Seeley worked around a leadoff single in the top of the first as he retired the next three Eagles while the Royals opened the scoring in the bottom half. David Rivera ripped a leadoff double to start the game and was quickly brought in on an Alex Moreno RBI single to put the Royals up 1-0. Two batters later Alec Arnone ripped an RBI double to left center to increase the Royals lead to 2-0. Seeley meanwhile worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the second getting a groundout to end the threat. The Eagles kept coming though as they took advantage of an error to load the bases again in the top of the third and would then push across a run to make it 2-1. That's all Seeley would allow as he got a lineout to limit the damage.

The Eagles would eventually tie the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth but the Royals struck back in the bottom of the fifth. The Royals would start a two out rally with Rivera and Moreno reaching base before Cruz ripped an RBI single through the left side allowing two runs to score to put the Royals back on top 4-2. Justin Drury who came in in relief then put the Eagles down in order in the top of the sixth while the Royals looked to add their lead in the bottom half. Things were looking good as the Royals put runners on first and second with nobody out but a botched bunt left just one runner on with two down. Maciel still took advantage as he ripped an RBI double into the right centerfield gap to pu the Royals up 5-2.

Needing just nine outs to advance to the winner's bracket the Royals were looking good but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead as the Eagles put up three in the seventh to tie it 5-5 and two in the the top of the eighth to take a 7-5 lead. The Royals still had chances in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to get a base runner as they fell 7-5.

With the loss the Royals fall into the loser's bracket and will take on eighth seeded Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday, May 25 at 8:35 AM at Harris Field in Lewiston, ID.
