No. 10 Royals Fall Short Against Blue Jays 12-8 in NAIA Opening Round

Fayette, MO – The No. 10 Hope International University baseball team (39-15) fell 12-8 to the Tabor University Blue Jays on Wednesday evening at Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO.

Josh Landry got the start and pitched four innings allowing seven runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out three. David Rudd-Grow (1-2) took the loss in relief pitching 3 2/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two. David Rivera and Alex Moreno led the Royals offense driving in two runs each. 

Landry got things started putting the Blue Jays down in order in the top of the first while the Royals opened the scoring in the bottom half. Alec Arnone put the Royals ahead early with a two out RBI single to make it 1-0. The Blue Jays would strike back with a run in the top of the second to tie it 1-1 but the Royals would answer in the bottom half. Derek Sims would lead things off with a double and then come around to score on a two out RBI single by David Rivera to put the Royals back ahead 2-1. Alex Moreno and JJ Cruz would follow with back to back RBI singles to increase the lead to 5-1.

The Blue Jays would answer in the top of the third to pull within 5-4 but the Royals answered again in the bottom half. Ryan Maciel started a two out rally with a walk and would then score on an Amari Bartee double to left to put the Royals up 6-4. Rivera then ripped an RBI single to left to increase the Royals lead to 7-4. After a scoreless fourth inning the Blue Jays would tie the game 7-7 in the top of the fifth. The Royals would then retake the lead in the bottom half as Alex Moreno delivered a two out RBI single to center to put the Royals back up 8-7. Rudd-Grow then came in from the bullpen and worked out of a jam in the top of the sixth and top of the seventh innings to keep the Royals ahead 8-7.

The Blue Jays didn't give up though and rallied to take the lead in the top of the eighth as they scored three runs with two outs to go up 10-8. The Royals didn't give up as they tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth but were unable to score with the Blue Jays added two more runs in the top of the ninth to make it 12-8. The Royals once again tried to rally as Maciel got things started with a single but they couldn't cash in as they fell 12-8.

With the loss the Royals now face a winner take all game against Tabor for the NAIA Opening Round Championship in the Fayette Bracket on Thursday, May 16 at 8:00 AM PT / 10:00 AM CT in Fayette, MO.
