Lamastra Leads Royals to GSAC Series Sweep of Oaks

Atherton, CA – The No. 16 Hope International University baseball team (23-9, 11-3 GSAC) won their 11th game in a row as they pulled away late to defeat the Menlo College Oaks 11-5 to sweep their GSAC series on Saturday afternoon at Menlo College in Atherton, CA.

Justin Drury got the start and pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out four. Bear Pinedo (1-1) picked up his first win in relief pitching 2/3 off an inning allowing two runs on two hits while striking out one. Ryan Lamastra led the Royals offense going 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs.

The game was scoreless through three innings until the Royals offense came to life in the top of the fourth. Dean Togio started a two out rally as he launched his fourth home run in four games to put the Royals on top 1-0. After Derek Sims worked a walk Lamastra crushed his first home run of the year to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. Later in the inning Matthew Dorado delivered an RBI single down the right field line to make it 4-0. The Oaks responded in the bottom half as they chased Drury from the game getting two runs to make it 4-2.

The Royals offense extended their lead back out to three in the top of the fifth as JJ Cruz smashed his team leading 6th home run of the year to make it 5-2. The Oaks kept coming though as they got two runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 5-4. Sakemi Sato who had come in from the bullpen limited the damage as he got a strikeout and a popout to end the inning.

Sato then pitched a scoreless sixth inning while the Royal extended their lead in the top of the seventh. David Rivera led things off with a single before Alex Moreno ripped an RBI double down the left field line to make it 6-4. Cruz then delivered an RBI single down the right field line to make it 7-4. Later in the inning Toigo would drive in another run on a fielder's choice as the Royals took an 8-4 lead. The Oaks battled back with a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-5 but Gio Besio limited the damage with a strikeout to end the inning.

The Royals offense continued to add to their lead as Amari Bartee crushed his fourth home run of the year to make it 9-5. Besio then pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth while the Royals struck again in the top of the ninth. With a runner on second and one out Derek Sims ripped an RBI double down the right field line to make it 10-5. Lamastra then drove in his third run of the game as he dropped a single down the right field line to make it 11-5. Chandler DeJong then came in from the bullpen to retire the Oaks in order and seal the Royals 11th win in a row.

The Royals were set to play a second game against the Oaks but it was canceled in the bottom of the second inning due to lightning. 
  
The Royals continue action on the road as they head to Azusa, CA to take on Azusa Pacific University on Tuesday, April 2 at 5:00 PM.
