Royals Topple Division III Panthers 8-3 For Ninth Win in a Row

Fullerton, CA – The No. 20 Hope International University baseball team (21-9, 9-3 GSAC) won their ninth game in a row as they took down NCAA Division III Chapman University Panthers 8-3 on Tuesday evening at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

David Rudd-Grow got the start and pitched three innings allowing two runs, one earned on four hits while striking out six. Gio Besio (1-1) pitching two shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out four. Dean Toigo and Ryan Maciel led the Royals offense with 3 RBIs each.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second as the Royals put runners on second and third with one out. Amari Bartee then laid down a beautiful bunt allowing Derek Sims to race home from third and put the Royals up 1-0. That lead didn't last long as the Panthers took advantage of an error before scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Bear Pinedo then came in from the bullpen to pitch a scoreless top of the fourth while striking out two while the Royals look to retake the lead in the bottom half. After Alec Arnone reached on an error Derek Sims unloaded an RBI double to right center to tie the game 2-2. Ryan Maciel then delivered an RBI groundout to second to put the Royals back on top 3-2.

Once again the Panthers came back as they put two on with two out in the top of the sixth before an RBI single tied it 3-3, but a great play from Toigo in left gunned down a second runner trying to score to end the inning and limit the damage. The Royals then retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Ryan Maciel forced an error to drive in two runs and give the Royals a 5-3 lead. Gio Besio then struck out the side in the top of the seventh while the Royals added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh as Toigo crushed his second home run of the year over the right field wall to increase the Royals lead to 7-3. Besio continued to shutdown the Panthers while Togio delivered again in the bottom of the eighth with a two out RBI single to increase the Royals lead to 8-3. Sakemi Sato then came in from the bullpen to finish off the game as he worked around a single and a walk to retire the side and seal an 8-3 win.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they look to make up their series against Menlo beginning on Friday, March 29th at 1:00 PM in Atherton, CA weather permitting.
