Arnone Leads Royals to 14-5 Win Over No. 19 Spirit

Surprise, AZ – The No. 20 Hope International University baseball team (18-9, 7-3 GSAC) ran their winning streak to six games as they opened a big three game GSAC series against No. 19 OUAZ with a 14-5 win on Friday evening in Surprise, AZ.

Trey Seeley (4-2) picked up his fourth win as he pitched 6 innings allowing two runs, one earned on seven hits while walking two and striking out six. Alec Arnone led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Royals opened up the scoring in the top of the first as JJ Cruz started a two out rally with a double to left center. Arnone then came through with a clutch RBI single to right to put the Royals up 1-0. The Spirit would quickly tie it in the bottom half as they took advantage of an error to make it 1-1. From there it was a pitcher's duel as Seeley shutdown the Spirit working around two singles to retire the side in the top of the second. Seeley continued to deal getting three strikeouts in the bottom of the fourth to keep the game tied 1-1.

The Spirit though would scratch across a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Seeley would get a pop out to limit the damage while the Royals offense answered in the top of the sixth. The Royals would load the bases with one down and would tie the game 2-2 on a wild pitch. Ryan Maciel would then force an error as two more runs scored to give the Royals a 4-2 lead. Seeley then pitched a scoreless sixth while the Royals got back to work in the top of the seventh. The Royals got things started with three straight singles with Arnone driving in his second run of the game to make it 5-2. A walk would reload the bases before Derek Sims laid down a beautiful sac bunt to make it 6-2. The Royals would take advantage of another error to make it 8-2 before David Rivera ripped a two run single through the left side to give the Royals a commanding 10-2 lead.

The Spirit would answer in the bottom of the seventh to make it 10-5 but Boom Ward who came in in relief came back to strikeout the next batter and induce a double play to limit the damage. Ward then shutdown the Spirit in the eighth while the Royals offense continued to score in the ninth as they took advantage of two more errors to take a 13-5 lead. Arnone then delivered a sac fly to increase the Royals lead to 14-5. Chandler De Jong then came in from the bullpen and put the Spirit down in order to seal a 14-5 win for the Royals.

The Royals wrap up their GSAC series against No. 19 OUAZ with a doubleheader beginning on Saturday, March 23 at 1:30 PM in Surprise, AZ.
