Coronado's Blast Helps Lead Royals to Sweep of Oaks

Fullerton, CA – The No. 7 Hope International University softball team (24-7, 4-4 GSAC) got a much needed doubleheader sweep as they took down the Menlo College Oaks 3-1 and 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at home at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA..

Game 1:
Allie Puente (14-6) got back on the winning track as she threw a complete game 7 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out 13. Ariana Coronado led the offense going 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

Puente got things started as she struck out the side in the top of the first going on to strikeout 8 of the first 10 batters she faced. The Royals offense was also held off the board for the first three innings while the Oaks finally scratched across a run in the top of the fourth. Puente would then strikeout the final batter of the inning to limit the damage.

The Royals offense then looked to pick up Puente in the bottom half as they put runners on first and second with one out. Ariana Coronado then launched her first home run of the year to give the Royals a 3-1 lead. That's all the offense Puente would need as she shutdown the Oaks from there putting them down in order in the sixth and the seventh as the Royals won 3-1.

Game 2:
Grace Craig (8-1) picked up the win pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing one run on five hits while walking two. Allie Puente picked up her third save as she pitched the final 1 2/3 innings allowing no runs on no hits while striking out two. Kayla Stanley led the offense going 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The first game was also a pitcher's duel as Craig put the Oaks down in order in the top of the first and second innings while the Royals got on the board in the bottom half. The Royals would load the bases with two singles and a walk with one out. Stanley then ripped an RBI single to put the Royals up 1-0. Sarah Reisler then delivered a sac fly to increase the Royals lead to 2-0.

The Oaks struck back in the top of the third with a two out double to make it 2-1 but that's all Craig allowed as she induced a groundout to end the inning. Craig then worked out of trouble in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to keep the Royals lead intact. After the Oaks got a one out hit in the top of the sixth Puente came in to get the save as she retired the final five batters in order to seal a 2-1 win.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they travel to Costa Mesa, CA to take on GSAC leading Vanguard with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 at 12:00 PM.
