Zavala Leads Royals to 3-1 Win Over Pioneers

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International men's volleyball team (2-0) overcame a slow start to take down the Pacific Union College Pioneers 3-1 in their home opener on Saturday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

It was a back and forth game to start until the Pioneers pulled away to take a 14-10 lead. The Royals fought back to get within 14-13 with a kill each from Julian Zavala and Kyler Tufuga but the Pioneers continued to lead taking a 25-24 lead. Zavala then tied it 25-25 but the Pioneers got the final two points as they took the set 27-25 and a 1-0 lead. The Royals bounced back in the second set as they led throughout with back to back kills by Santiago Mantovani and Zavala putting the Royals up 7-3. The Pioneers tried to get back in it but the Royals answered point for point eventually extending their lead to 22-13 on a kill by Brian Castro. Javier Castillo then finished off the set with a service error as the Royals won 25-15 to tie it 1-1. 

The Royals continued their momentum into the third set as the Royals opened on a 10-3 run led by two kills from Tufuga and two blocks from Castro and RJ Ruacho. The Pioneers pulled back within 10-9 but the Royals had all the answers as they went up 16-10 on a kill by Zavala. The Pioneers got within 21-16 but the Royals closed on a 4-0 run with back to back kills from Prowse and Tufuga giving the Royals a 25-16 win and a 2-1 lead. The Royals continued to lead in the fourth set as a kill by Zavala put the Royals up 8-4. The Pioneers continued to battle but the Royals went on a 6-1 run with two kills from Castro to take a 16-8 lead. It was all Royals from there as they closed the game out on a 4-0 run with a kill from Prowse delivering a 25-14 win to win 3-1. Zavala led the way with 15 kills.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Westcliff on Wednesday, February 7 at 6:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
