Sii Leads with 19 as Royals Rally From 14 Down to Defeat Oaks 65-61

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team rallied from 14 down in the second half to take down the Menlo College Oaks 65-61 to open up GSAC Tournament play at home on Thursday evening in the Darling Pavilion.

It was a defensive slugfest from the start with the teams exchanging the lead until the Oaks pulled out to a 12-8 advantage with 12:33 to go. Gaven Ramirez answered with a three to make it 12-11 but the Oaks pulled back out to a 17-12 advantage with 8:42 remaining. The Oaks then went up 20-14 but the Royals regrouped after a timeout as a Ramirez jumper started a mini 7-3 run as the Royals pulled with 23-21 with around five minutes left in the half. The Oaks would quickly answer to make it 26-21 but the Royals continued to stay close as Grant Sii came off the bench to hit back to back shots and make it 26-25. The Oaks would then go up 30-25 but Ramirez found Jalen Shores in the corner for a dagger three at the buzzer to pull the Royals within 30-28 at the half.

The Royals got off to a good start out of the break as back to back buckets from Ramirez and Sii put the Royals back ahead 32-30. The Oaks though came right back on a 18-2 run to take a 48-34 lead with 14:08 to go. The Royals weren't about to blown out at home though as they came storming back on a 18-4 run with seven points from Sii and six points from Cameron Dashiell to tie the game 52-52 with 6:21 to go. The Oaks would immediately answer to retake a 57-52 lead but once again the Royals tied it with back to back buckets from Sii with 2:02 to go. The Royals defense then held the Oaks scoreless while Calen Murray battled to the rim to lay it in with :29 seconds left to put the Royals up 63-61. The Royals would then finish off the game from the line as they won 65-61. Sii led with 19 points off the bench while the Royals defense held the co-GSAC Player of the Year to just four points.

With the win the Royals advance to the GSAC Tournament Semifinals and will take on the second seed The Master's University Mustangs on Friday, March 1 at 7:15 PM at home in the Darling Pavilion.
