Royals Fall to Red Hawks in Five Set Thriller

Atherton, CA – The Hope International men's volleyball team (4-5) dropped their final game of the tournament as they fell 3-2 in a five set thriller to the Simpson University Red Hawks on Saturday afternoon at Menlo College in Atherton, CA.

The first set was a battle with the teams exchanging the lead until back to back kills from Coby Prowse put the Royals up 13-9. The Red Hawks battled back to tie it before going on to take a 21-20 lead. The Royals answered on a 5-1 run finished off by a kill from Prowse to win the first set 25-22 and take a 1-0 lead. The Red Hawks bounced back in the second set as they took a 14-13 lead. The Royals answered with a 5-2 run with three kills from Julian Zavala putting them up 18-16. The Red Hawks weren't to be denied as they came storming back to take a 22-20 lead before going to win the set 25-22 and tie the game 1-1.

The Royals took the early lead in the third set as a kill by Kyler Tufuga put them up 12-11. The teams then swapped the lead several times until back to back kills from Brian Castro and Diego Bejar put the Royals up 24-22. The Red Hawks then staved off match point multiple times until the Royals closed the set on a 3-0 run with back to back kills from Zavala to win 31-29 and take a 2-1 lead. The Royals looked to close out the game in the third set as a 4-0 run with back to back aces from Tufuga put them up 14-8. The Red Hawks had other ideas as they closed within 20-18 before ending the set on a 7-1 run to win 25-21 and tie the game 2-2.

The Red Hawks continued their momentum into the fifth set as they took an early 8-3 lead. Later with the score 12-7 the Royals went on a 5-1 run led by two kills from Prowse to pull within 13-12. That was as close as they got as the Red Hawks closed out the set to win 15-12 as the Royals fell 3-2. Zavala led the Royals with 22 kills.

The Royals open up GSAC play at home against NAIA defending Champion Vanguard on Wednesday, February 21 at 6:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
